Wijk aan Zee, 5 December 2022 – The field of participants of the Tata Steel Challengers has been announced. This group also consists of a mix of established players and promising young talents. For example, 13-year-old Abhimanyu Mishra from the United States, 16-year-old Dutch Eline Roebers and 17-year-old Javokir Sindarov from Uzbekistan are among the participants. From 13 to 29 January 2023, the 85th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament will take place in Wijk aan Zee. The winner of the Challengers will earn a starting ticket for the Masters of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in 2024.
“We already had a wonderful field of participants at the Masters, but this group of Challengers is also very strong,” said tournament director Jeroen van den Berg. “With a number of special talents here too. What about Abhimanyu Mishra, who became the youngest chess grandmaster in the world last July at the age of twelve years, four months and 25 days. And I really like that Eline Roebers is participating, a very great Dutch talent. Two years ago she became world champion in the girls under 14 years. This year she won the silver medal on board-1 at the Olympiad and was named International Master.”
