World Champion Magnus Carlsen has won the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. Playing black, he managed to beat Fabiano Caruana today. It was his 8th win, a unique achievement. Erigaisi Arjun (India) has won the Tata Steel Challengers. By doing so he has earned a spot in the Tata Steel Masters next year. The 85th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament will take place from 13 – 29 January 2023.
Tournament director Jeroen van den Berg: “Magnus Carlsen has played a strong tournament. His 8th victory is a unique achievement in the history of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. We still have one more round to go, but I can already safely say that the tournament has been a success from a chess aficionado’s perspective. Erigaisi Arjun has proved to be a revelation. He will definitely bring a positive contribution to the Tata Steel Masters next year. I’m also very proud of everybody in the tournament organisation. With a lot of effort we have faced the challenges regarding COVID-19 as well as possible.”
