The Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2022 will go ahead, but without amateur groups. In light of the current COVID-19 situation the organisation has decided that it would not be appropriate to host amateur tournaments in Wijk aan Zee in January. The municipality of Beverwijk has been informed about this and supports the decision. The organisation had already decided not to allow spectators during the event. All this means that only the top chess players of the Tata Steel Masters and Tata Steel Challengers will come to Wijk aan Zee on 14 January to participate in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2022, in compliance with the top sports policy of the government and NOC*NSF during the corona pandemic. As during this year’s edition the tournament will be broadcast live via the website: www.tatasteelchess.com. The annual Tata Steel Chess Festival (22 and 23 January) for children will take place online. The organisation realizes that many people will be disappointed by the cancellation of the amateur tournaments, but hopes to be able to welcome back both amateur players and spectators during the 85th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in 2023.

Het Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2022 gaat door, maar zonder amateurgroepen. Gezien de ontwikkelingen rondom het coronavirus heeft de organisatie besloten dat het niet verantwoord is om in januari amateurschakers te ontvangen in Wijk aan Zee. De Gemeente Beverwijk is hiervan op de hoogte gesteld en heeft begrip voor de beslissing. Eerder was al bekendgemaakt dat er geen publiek zou worden toegelaten. Concreet betekent dit dat alleen de topsporters van de Tata Steel Masters en Tata Steel Challengers op 14 januari naar Wijk aan Zee komen voor het Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2022. Dit is in lijn met het topsportbeleid van de overheid en NOC*NSF tijdens de coronapandemie. Het toernooi zal net als de editie van dit jaar wereldwijd live te volgen zijn via de website www.tatasteelchess.com. Het jaarlijkse Tata Steel Chess Festival (22 en 23 januari) voor kinderen zal online plaatsvinden. De organisatie begrijpt dat het niet doorgaan van de amateurtoernooien voor velen een teleurstelling is en spreekt de hoop uit dat tijdens de 85e editie van het Tata Steel Chess Tournament in 2023 weer amateurs en publiek kunnen worden toegelaten.
