Field of participants Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2022 complete
After today’s announcement of the grandmasters of the Tata Steel Challengers the field of participants of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2022 is complete. Anish Giri (7th on the world ranking) and Jorden van Foreest, winner of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021, will represent The Netherlands in the Tata Steel Masters. Both grandmaster groups consist of a mix of well-established players and promising young players. That mix is one of the reasons behind the success of the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament, also known as ‘The Wimbledon of Chess’. Featuring 13 rounds it is also the world’s most challenging tournament. The 84th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament will take place in Wijk aan Zee from 14 – 30 January 2022.
COVID-19 measures
Under current COVID-19 regulations spectators are not allowed at the tournament. That is also the reason for not having a Chess On Tour event. For the time being amateur tournaments are still scheduled to go ahead, but in a trimmed-down version, in order to ensure players can maintain a safe distance. The organisers of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament will meticulously see to it that all current COVID-19 measures are implemented and followed during the tournament.
Youngest participant multitalented: chess and soccer player
The Tata Steel Challengers are a very young group in the upcoming edition: 11 of the 14 players were born in this millennium. Marc’Andria Maurizzi (14) is the youngest participant and is France’s youngest chess player ever. The Corsican is that rare multitalented breed: he is also an excellent soccer player! The two highest ranked junior players of the world list of women under 20 will also participate: Polina Shuvalova and Zhu Jiner, the number one and two players, respectively. The highest ranked player is Rinat Jumabayev from Kazachstan. He became the centre of attention when he eliminated Fabiano Caruana at the World Cup in
Sochi. Max Warmerdam, who won the Dutch Championship last week, is one of three Dutchmen, with Erwin l’Ami and Lucas van Foreest. Roven Vogel won the Tata Steel Qualifyers in 2020, thus earning promotion to the Tata Steel Challengers.
