Tata Steel Chess Festival huge success

Last weekend this year’s edition of the Tata Steel Chess Festival took place.

At Tata Steel we believe that mind sports like chess, physical exercise and creativity are key to the development of children’s brains. That is why the Chess Festival was centred around providing children with the opportunity to have a go at these three elements during the Tata – Kids of Steel® Games. All the activities took place online, due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, and were set up so they could be done in one’s home, with all family members. #ChessConnects.

Together with our partner Chessity, we organised the most fun online chess event for the whole family. Children were able to learn via online chess lessons and obtain their chess diploma and/or join one of the online chess tournaments. Our community partner SC Telstar offered an online soccer training, Dutch judo champion Duco Krijvenaar showed the basics of doing judo at home and students of the Academy of Tata Steel had set up some fun, “do it yourself” creative projects for kids.

Elske Hoving, Community Manager at Tata Steel: “It was a very successful festival weekend. Besides a very large amount of viewers during the live stream, many families tuned in on the festival page and numerous people took the opportunity to learn more about main sponsor Tata Steel during a virtual online company tour. Last week also the traditional youth simultaneous for children out of our community took place online this year. In total, 363 children played a game of chess against Hans Bohm, Stefan Kuipers, Anne Haast or Jop Delamarre.”

Luckily, the fun is not over yet! Throughout the upcoming week you can still play football with the trainer of SC Telstar, enjoy the judo exercises of Duco Krijvenaar and Jesse Thörig or show off your creativity with the students of the Academy of Tata Steel.

All in all, we are looking back at a successful and joyful Chess Festival. We tremendously enjoyed all the photos and videos that were posted by the participating kids on social media channels. Thanks to all the participants for your contribution and have fun during the remaining days of the 83rd edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. Stay active!
