Editorial Chairwoman Tata Steel Chess Tournament

What a ride it has been to prepare this year’s Tata Steel Chess Tournament.

After last year’s slimmed down, but very successful edition, we started preparing the tournament of 2022, confident that it would once again be a ‘normal’ edition.

Unfortunately, we have been surprised by another COVID-19 wave, followed by an uncertain period. We have reviewed all options very carefully but have had to make many difficult decisions. Obviously, these decisions have been made in close collaboration with the Municipality of Beverwijk and the national and regional Health & Safety authorities. We are in full compliance with all governmental, FIDE and KNSB COVID-19 rules, in order to ensure an adapted, yet COVID-19 safe event.

Now, just before the start of the 84th edition of ‘the Wimbledon of Chess’; I can proudly announce that both Tata Steel Masters and Challengers will join us again!

Being able to have the 28 chess grand masters play, face-to-face, right in the heart of our community adds value to chess fans as well as to our community. Wijk aan Zee will again become the (virtual) epicenter for chess professionals and lovers around the world.

Unfortunately, due to the measures, we are unable to set up a ful-fledged tournament with visitors and amateurs this year. Nevertheless, we have ensured an enhanced online experience.

Beside the high level daily livestream broadcasts from the Moriaan in Wijk aan Zee, we will provide a lot of online activities. This includes the recap of the opening ceremony, including the drawing of lots, and the closing ceremony. But also the annual Tata Steel Chess Festival. A new element is our online event called ‘The Gamer Changer’, which gives you insight into the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence. This technology plays a very important role in chess as well as in the manufacturing industry.

Although I have been involved with the tournament for many years, this is my first tournament as chairwoman. My experience is that chess truly connects people from all over the world. Not only within the fan base of the chess players and amateurs, also within the community and within the organisation staff of this event. It makes me incredibly proud and I am very happy to be part of it!

Will you join us online during this year’s Tata Steel Chess Tournament?

With warm regards,

Myrna Kleinen
Chairwoman of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament
