Defending champion Fabiano Caruana back in Wijk aan Zee

In addition to our Tournament Ambassador Anish Giri, we announce the second player in the Tata Steel Masters…

Fabiano Caruana, winner of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2020 and currently number 2 in the FIDE world rankings, returns to Wijk aan Zee. We are very happy to see our defending champion back again in January!

Caruana (1992 / U.S.A.) started the 12th and one but last round in 2020 with a one point advantage on World Champion Magnus Carlsen. The last round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament started with a big applause for Fabiano Caruana, who emerged victorious in the Tata Steel Masters in Round 12. His game with black against Vladislav Artemiev ended in another victory for Caruana in the last round. Caruana has scored 10 points out of 13 games, a remarkable achievement.
