Tata Steel Chess on Tour to visit Hilversum and Groningen
In 2018, during the 80th anniversary of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, the Grandmasters of the Tata Steel Masters are playing in both Hilversum and Groningen.
Wednesday the 17th of January 2018, Hilversum is hosting the Grandmasters in the Sound and Vision (Beeld en Geluid) building in Hilversum. On Wednesday the 24th of January the Grandmasters will be playing in The Academy Building of the University of Groningen.
The 80th anniversary of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament takes place again in Wijk aan Zee from 12 to 28 January 2018. For the fifth time in the history of the tournament the Tata Steel Masters visit two special locations elsewhere in the Netherlands as part of Chess on Tour. All rounds, in Wijk aan Zee, Hilversum and Groningen, are open to the public. The players of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament will be announced in the fall of 2017.
“Groningen and Hilversum both have a prominent place in the history of chess in our country”, says tournament director Jeroen van den Berg. “Many different training matches were organised by the KRO in Hilversum between 1982 and 1991 for Jan Timman. He even played former world champion Kasparov there. The city also organised the Dutch Championship Chess numerous times.
Groningen is home to many chess players like the Van Foreest family, Sipke Ernst, Sergei Tiviakov and Jan Werle. In 2013 the city organised a rematch between Karpov and Timman. Groningen was home to the World Championship Chess in 1997 and organised the European Championship more than twenty times. As you can see, both cities have a rich chess history and are perfect locations to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament”, states Van den Berg.
