Tata Steel Chess Festival in Wijk aan Zee on January 21 and 22

Wijk aan Zee, January 9 2023 – On Saturday 21 and Sunday January 22, the Tata Steel Chess Festival will take place again in Wijk aan Zee. During the family festival, various activities are organised around the famous Tata Steel Chess Tournament on these two days from 11:00 to 16:00.

Especially for children, there are the Tata-Kids of Steel® Games. Chess, exercise and creativity are the keys in the formation and growth of children’s brains. Children can learn about these three elements this weekend. After doing an activity within all three categories, children will receive a medal.

Fun for the whole family

Besides playing chess and/or getting chess lessons themselves, there will be basketball, table tennis, ice skating, a fun scavenger hunt and a real bunker walk, children can participate in technical crafts and the Tata Steel Orchestra will give a number of musical workshops. There is also the possibility to take a bus for a guided tour of the Tata Steel premises (for everyone aged 12 and older), or to go to the Blast Furnace Museum. Of course it is also possible to take a look at the top chess players in De Moriaan, or listen to the live chess commentary in Café De Zon.

Jubilee edition

The 85th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament will take place in Wijk aan Zee from January 13 to 29, 2023. Traditionally, the grandmasters will also travel back to the country. On Thursday, January 19, the Masters will play their fifth round as part of ‘Chess On Tour’ in the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam. All playing days are open to interested parties free of charge after registration (register on our website) and can also be followed live online.
